Signs and Symptoms

The main symptoms of diabetes are:

  • passing urine more often than usual, especially at night
  • increased thirst
  • extreme tiredness
  • unexplained weight loss
  • genital itching or regular episodes of thrush
  • slow healing of cuts and wounds
  • blurred vision

For me the thing that clenched it was the thirst, it was unquenchable. I used to have pints and pints of drinks taken up to bed of a night-time! And of course what goes in must come out, so the frequent visits to the toilet were also true for me. I also suffered tiredness (and still do in fact) but the rest of the symptoms were non – existent. So what I experienced may not be what you experience, so if you are in any doubt – visit your GP as soon as you can.

I’ve had Diabetes a few years now and things are plodding along OK (ish), but one thing I have noticed is that any wounds I get take far longer to heal than previously. Now this could be due to my Diabetes, which is probable or it could be due to the fact I am now over 50 and healing has started to slow down – or both!

  1. This is a really good post for bringing awareness of it because so many symptoms could be thought of as one – off

  2. Thanks Choc Chip Uru, in the UK alone they reckon there are about a million people with diabetes who don’t realise. The symptoms (unless drastic) can easily be ignored. For me it was the thirst that was the give away sign…. Thanks for the post!
